Post Seeded Browser AI Total
Loading…

A view counts once the page has been visible for five seconds, so a bounce does not. One reader counts once per post per day. That is the same rule Medium uses, and it is stricter than Substack, which counts every load including your own refreshes.

No cookies and no stored IP addresses. A reader is a hash of IP address and browser, salted with a secret that rotates at midnight UTC, so today's hash cannot be matched to yesterday's or to a person.

AI assistants that fetch a post because someone asked them to are counted too, and they are part of the totals above. They never run JavaScript, so they are counted at the edge instead. There is no five-second rule for them: an assistant that fetched the page read all of it. Crawlers collecting training data and search indexers are not counted, because nobody is reading at the moment they fetch.

Counted with a Cloudflare Pages Function writing to a D1 database, about 25 views a day, which is roughly 0.03% of the free tier. Cloudflare Web Analytics still runs alongside it as an independent number to check against.
